How to Choose the Right Edge Banding Hot Melt Adhesive

Edge banding is unforgiving. The glue line is 0.1–0.2 mm wide, visible on every finished panel, and must survive years of use. The difference between a clean edge and a rejected batch of furniture usually comes down to three numbers on the adhesive’s data sheet: softening point, melt viscosity, and open time. Choose them correctly and edge banding becomes one of the most reliable processes in the factory; choose them casually and you will chase glue bleed, open joints, and debonding edges indefinitely.

This guide walks through how to match an EVA hot melt adhesive to your edge banding line.

What Edge Banding Demands From the Glue

Before parameters, understand the job:

  • Very thin glue line. The applicator roller delivers 0.15–0.25 mm of molten glue to the panel edge. The adhesive must flow at that thickness without running off.
  • Porous substrate. The panel edge (particleboard or MDF) absorbs glue. The adhesive must not sink into the board, or the banding is starved.
  • Seconds to bond. The panel passes from glue application through the pressure rollers in 1–3 seconds. Initial grab must be immediate and the bond formed at the trimming station.
  • Instant handling strength, long-term durability. Panels are trimmed and stacked within seconds; the same glue line must hold for the life of the furniture in its service climate.

Parameter 1: Softening Point — Match It to Your Climate

Softening point (Ring & Ball) indicates the heat class of the adhesive. For edge banding, common grades fall into three bands:

The failure mode of too low a softening point is glue creep: panels that leave the factory perfect and arrive with opened edges after a summer in a shipping container at 60 °C+. If you export to hot, humid regions — Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, South America — treat 85 °C as your floor, not your target.

The failure mode of too high a softening point is brittleness: the glue line can crack on impact. For most applications 80–95 °C is the useful window.

Parameter 2: Melt Viscosity — Match It to Your Machine and Panel

For edge banding, melt viscosity at 180 °C typically lands between 20,000 and 60,000 mPa·s:

  • Low viscosity (~20,000–30,000): fine, thin glue lines on high-speed straight-line banders; good for pre-sealing applications. Watch for bleed-through on thin veneers.
  • Medium (~30,000–40,000): the safe general-purpose range for most single-sided and through-feed banders.
  • High (~40,000–60,000): thick, porous or coarse-chip board edges; softforming and contour banders; resists sinking into the board.

Signs your viscosity is wrong: glue bleed-through or starved dry joints (too low), or a glue line that breaks because the adhesive never wetted the banding (too high). Note that viscosity depends on the actual glue pot temperature — a 10 °C drop thickens the melt noticeably. Which brings us to the next point.

Parameter 3: Open Time — Match It to Your Line Speed

Open time is how long applied glue stays bondable. Your machine’s glue-to-press distance (how many seconds elapse between application and the pressure rollers) dictates the requirement:

  • High-speed through-feed banders (18–35 m/min): open time of just a few seconds, fast setting.
  • Softforming and contour banders where the band wraps around the profile: longer open time grades.
  • Manual or small-shop banders: the longest open times, because humans are slower than rollers.

Match the Glue to the Banding Material

EVA edge banding adhesives must be tuned to the edge tape being used:

  • PVC and ABS (the most common): standard EVA grades with good wetting. ABS needs slightly better wetting due to its surface energy.
  • Melamine and impregnated papers: fast-grab formulations, because the paper face can absorb heat from the glue quickly.
  • Wood veneer and solid wood lippings: higher-viscosity grades to avoid bleed-through, plus attention to moisture content of the lipping itself.
  • Acrylic and PMMA bands: check with your supplier — these often need a modified formulation for reliable adhesion.

Common Defects and Which Parameter Fixes Them

  • Glue bleed-through on veneer → viscosity too low, or application temperature too high.
  • Open joints / gaps at banding ends → open time too short for line speed, or glue pot temperature too low.
  • Edge lifting after weeks in service → softening point too low for the service climate, or contaminated panel edges.
  • Glue line cracks on impact → softening point too high / formulation too brittle.
  • Poor adhesion on shiny bands → wetting problem; needs a formulation change, not a temperature tweak.

Granules, Sticks, or Blocks?

Edge banders almost universally run granules/pellets — they meter cleanly, melt evenly, and can be topped up on the fly. Sticks belong to glue guns and repair work; blocks and pillows suit large tank systems. All three forms of the same formulation perform identically; choose by machine, not by preference.
